Marriage and Family Therapist Intern

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT Helene
I grew up in Chicago, IL, where I always dreamt of moving out West. The harsh Midwest winters never quite fit my vision of a life filled with sunshine and natural beauty. When the pandemic reshaped the world around me, it also ignited the courage to pursue my dream—leading me to the vibrant landscapes of Colorado. While I sometimes miss the familiar city skyline and my family’s closeness, the majesty of the mountains continues to inspire and ground me.
Coming from a large family, I was raised amidst a tapestry of relationships—my Mom is one of 12 siblings, and I have over 20 aunts and uncles and 50 first cousins. This rich, complex network sparked my early fascination with human behavior and the intricate dynamics of relationships. My academic background in psychology and social change deepened my understanding of how early experiences shape who we become. Discovering attachment theory felt like uncovering a personal blueprint for connection and healing, solidifying my commitment to support individuals and families as they navigate life’s challenges.
Why I am pursuing a career as a Marriage and Family Therapist
I chose the path of Marriage and Family Therapy because I firmly believe in the healing power of genuine relationships. The support and love I have received throughout my life have shown me that our connections define us. Growing up in a challenging home environment, I experienced firsthand the impact of unspoken emotions and the habit of suppressing feelings. Through my own therapeutic journey, I have learned to embrace vulnerability, develop deeper self-compassion, and cultivate empathy for others—lessons that now form the cornerstone of my practice.
Today, I am dedicated to creating safe, nonjudgmental spaces where people can explore and express their true selves. I am especially passionate about Emotionally Focused Therapy, an approach that honors the fundamental emotions underlying our pain. I understand that sharing feelings of sadness, grief, or disappointment can be daunting, yet I have seen how transformative it can be when individuals allow themselves to heal. With each day, I continue to learn, grow, and commit to the profound belief that strong, authentic relationships are the key to overcoming life’s obstacles and achieving lasting change.
